FAQ
on CARBON NEUTRALITY
WHAT DOES CARBON NEUTRAL MEAN?
Carbon neutrality, as already defined by the IPCC (United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) in 2018, is the «situation in which net anthropogenic CO₂ emissions are offset globally by anthropogenic CO₂ removals in a certain period.” The key actions are to reduce and compensate: fewer emissions and – given that reaching zero is not possible with current technologies – more activities to counterbalance, such as reforestation or sustainable mobility interventions.
WHAT IS INCORPORATED CARBON?
According to the World Green Building Council, embodied carbon emissions come from the materials used and construction processes during all phases of the life of a building or infrastructure. Embodied carbon emissions include material extraction, transportation to the manufacturer, actual manufacturing, transportation to the construction site, construction, use phase, maintenance, repairs, replacements, renovations, deconstructions, transportation of decommissioned facilities, processing and disposal.
WHAT IS A CARBON NEUTRAL or CO2 NEUTRAL TILE?
The carbon neutral tile is a ceramic or stoneware tile whose associated carbon emissions have been offset with carbon credits through participation in specific projects certified by third-party bodies.
WHAT ARE CARBON CREDITS AND HOW DO THEY WORK?
Carbon trading is the market that allows companies to sell and buy so-called carbon certificates, i.e. the right to emit a certain amount of CO2 emissions. The goal of carbon trading, which dates back to the Kyoto Protocol and began in 2005, is to gradually reduce total emissions. Carbon credits, also known as carbon offsets, are certificates that represent a ton of carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases that have been reduced or removed from the atmosphere and are purchased by companies to help offset the CO2 emissions they produce . These purchases finance other companies’ projects that reduce or absorb carbon emissions. In this way, products whose total carbon footprint cannot be eliminated through further interventions on production processes can be declared carbon neutral.
WHAT ELSE DOES PANARIAGROUP DO TO SUPPORT SUSTAINABILITY IN THE SECTOR OF CERAMIC SURFACES FOR FLOORS AND CLADDINGS?
Panariagroup is a leader in sustainability and the THINk ZERO project was born from the Group’s desire to pursue a factual and concrete approach to sustainability as attested by the certified Sustainability Report that it publishes every year.
